Four experts will talk about crime, punishment and the community in a panel discussion about the criminal- justice system next Thursday in the Burchfield Penney Art Center, 1300 Elmwood Ave.

The discussion will focus on how to create a more effective system that doesn't disrupt families, increase poverty and that gives a second chance to young ex-offenders transitioning back into the community. Panelists are: Karima Amin, founder/director, Prisoners Are People Too; Ron Stewart, a SUNY Buffalo State sociology professor; Umar Adeyola, founder of HEART [Helping Empower At-Risk Teens]; and Alfonso Carter, an ex-offender who became a successful entrepreneur.

Rod Watson, Buffalo News columnist and urban affairs editor, will moderate.

New York State should pass legislation to raise the age of adult criminal responsibility from 16 to 18 so that youth who are charged with a crime are treated in more age appropriate manner.
